Part of retrocomputing is getting your mind back into the day without losing touch with the present. I've been chasing down books, pdf copies of books, disks, magazines, and so forth. I've also been visiting various YouTube sites and webpages. Through time, I'll be cataloging and commenting on these in terms of how they help me to better understand a part of my past and make things more present in the here and now.
In part, I am doing this for myself. But, there is a larger dimension. I hope that my grandchildren will become interested in this aspect of computer history and computing. Brian Kernighan, of Unix fame, has recently written a number of books to help people understand how they might live well in a digital world. Windows, Unix and Linux have had a great impact on that world. But, so have the MOS6502 and the Z80 chipsets.
I love using Linux and the commandline. But, Basic and the possibilities afforded to many young boys and girls has also shaped our digital world as well. In some ways, the Microsoft and Open Source worlds might not have had the reach and scope that they developed without computers like those produced by the Commodore or Acorn computer manufacturers.
So, I am reexploring that earlier and, perhaps, more cordial time for budding computer users and programmers. I do have a site where I am exploring the Linux/Unix world, as well as a site where I am exploring the microcontroller ethos. I'll make links to these in time.
